stacyStacy Starkweather began his musical life in Berkeley California. He began playing bass and guitar before he was a teenager, and began playing professionally at age 13 with bands that included Peter Apfelbaum (Hieroglyphics Ensemble, Trey Anastasio), Will Bernard (Jai Utall, TJ Kirk, and Motherbug), Steve Bernstein (Sex Mob) and others. Stacy was part of the now legendary Berkeley Arts Jazz program (led by Phil Hardymon), and he played guitar with Berkeley High Schools internationally acclaimed jazz band.

During a brief year in Ohio, he was named Best Rhythm Section Player for the state by the National Association of Jazz Educators and Stan Kenton’s Band. Throughout his teens he worked in the Hieroglyphics (which spawned dozens of current jazz stars including Craig Handy, Josh Jones, Norbert Statchel), and Bay Area favorites the Valkays. He also logged extensive nationally touring miles with the Texas based country singer Karen DeForrest.

After relocating to Vermont in 1985, Stacy got even busier. He is a founding member of such noted groups as the Disciples, The Gordon Stone Band, the Jazz Mandolin Project, Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe, and Bad Hat. He also put in lengthy stints with local legends Big Joe Burrell and Pure Pressure/Grippo Funk Band. His experience includes many national tours, as well as European Jazz Festivals in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Finland.

Stacy is now a Special Educator at Stowe High School, and continues to teach bass, as he has since 1974. Stacy can be heard currently doing guest appearances with the Abby Jenne Band, and playing every Wednesday night at the Shed in Stowe with Greg Matses and Gabe Jarrett.
